FedEx is closing a facility in Richland, Mississippi, on Sept. 4, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice obtained by Supply Chain Dive.

"This will result in the layoff of approximately three managers, 73 employees in the position of Courier, and one Handler," per the June 6 notice.

While the notice didn't specify what type of facility it is, the company's website lists 440 Highway 49 South as a FedEx Ship Center.

Some facility employees will remain employed by the company after Sept. 4, but will instead work at a FedEx location in nearby Pearl, Mississippi.

In a statement Thursday, FedEx said affected employees are receiving assistance with finding other jobs within the company, with relocation assistance and severance being offered where applicable.

"FedEx regularly evaluates its networks and makes adjustments based on changing customer demand, market conditions, package characteristics and other factors to enhance service, improve operational efficiencies and lower the cost to serve," the company said.

FedEx is in the midst of streamlining its network to lower costs and improve efficiencies while also combining its separate Express and Ground networks. The company said last year it aims to operate 100 fewer stations and cut more than 10% of pickup and delivery routes by FY2027.
